This new manual technique is a neuromuscular re-education intervention that enables therapists to help patients initiate and integrate trunk mobility and control exercises into their treatment routines. It combines several neurological and biomechanical principles to create a unique, functional and progressive movement practice. It gives clinicians manual skills that enable them to more effectively teach their patients how to improve their sitting balance and trunk control. We are currently performing extensive research on this new technique. Maneshka Perera OTR/L at NYU - Langone has conducted a small pilot study which suggests that the use of the technique produces significant improvements in the trunk control of people with spinal cord injury and she has prepared and presented an IRB abstract toallow her to conduct a retrospective study. We are also seeking funding to allow us to do a full scale prospective study at the hospital. We will be presenting the technique at the national conference of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals (ASCIP) in New Orleans in the Fall of 2015.

The Spinal Mobility technique is the foundational tool for the following educational programs produced by Spinal Mobility. These include:

The Lecture/Demonstration: This one hour lecture is presented to clinicians in their facility as a lunch time in-service or a brown-bag meeting. It is presented by an instructor with the assistance of a model-demonstrator; someone with SCI or other trunk weaknesslimitation.

The X Class: A demanding, free 8 week boot camp for people with Spinal Cord Injury that meets for 4 hours, once a week. During the class, participants learn about how to exercise and how to set up an exercise space in their homes. It is staffed by volunteering clinicians and students allowing all the participants to share their knowledge about exercise and rehabilitation while enabling the volunteers to practice the Spinal Mobility technique and review other fitness activities pertinent to this population. The class is held in the Spring and in the Fall.

The 6 Hour Workshop: Taught by clinicians who are experts in using the Spinal Mobility technique and assisted by model demonstrators, this class gives attendees an opportunity to learn hands-on skills when using the technique with people with different body types and levels of injuries. The class consists of 3 levels with certification upon completion of each of them. The Workshop is given in the Spring and Fall but it may also be hosted by any facility at any time. CEUs in PT are awarded for this class.

We have presented SM at several medical centers and schools, including:

Columbia University, NY

New York University, NY

Hunter College, NY

Stony Brook University, Suffolk County, NY

Gaylord Hospital, Wallingford, CT

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, White Plains, NY

Mount Sinai Hospital, NY

University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey (UMDNJ), Newark, NJ

We are excited and certain that one of these progressive and innovative programs will be of interest to you and your staff. We lookforward to an opportunity to bring Spinal Mobility to your facility.
